Wentworth By The Sea, New Castle, NH

Today was a beautiful day on the water. If we had not already made a commitment to the marina, we would have traveled farther. Wentworth Marina is part of a large Marriott resort so the marina and the amenities are very upscale. We had lunch here and then took the courtesy car to Portsmouth. The weather forecast for tomorrow is not great so we are hoping the seas will be calm enough for a comfortable ride to Provincetown.

Beautiful evening sunset

Spring Point Marina , South Portland

We left our boat here while we returned to Michigan. The marina is nice and the people were great. They took us to the airport and picked us up when we returned and then loaned us a courtesy car to do some grocery shopping.
South Portland is a more residential and commercial area. We were able to spend some time biking the South Portland Greenbelt Walkway, a lovely 10 mile walking/biking trail .

The Greenbelt Walkway was a nice bike ride.

Back in Cheboygan, Mi

We flew home from Portland, Maine for 10 days. I took care of a couple doctor appointments and then we went to Cheboygan. Once again, I am reminded that there are very few marinas anywhere as nice as Duncan Bay. The east coast is pretty but there is no comparison in value to what Michigan has to offer to boaters. We wish we could have had a little more time to spend at home.

Dolphin Marina and Restaurant, Harpswell, ME

This was our last stop with Linda and Robert until we return from Michigan. We loved this little marina and great restaurant. The marina delivered complimentary homemade blueberry muffins and coffee to our boat in the morning. We all decided that this restaurant is in our top 10 of all those we have visited. Calamari was possibly the best we have ever had. We stayed two nights but Linda and Robert only stayed one since they were headed to Sebasco Resort for massages and pedicures tomorrow. Since Paul is not a massage and pedicure guy, we took the dinghy out to Reversing Falls at Tidal Mill Cove. Reversing falls occur when rocks or other obstructions combine with the fast moving water of the tide moving out. Supposedly, this only occurs in Maine at a few different locations.

Portland, ME, DeMillo’s

We spent three days at DeMillo’s Marina in downtown Portland. We were very happy that a repairman came in from MA and fixed our washEr/dryer. He was an interesting guy with much experience. He previously worked as a fisherman and personally knew all the guys on Paul’s show, Wicked Tuna. He works in the New England area in the summer and then goes to Florida and works out of Ft Lauderdale in the winter. Portland is a fun city with great restaurants and nice shops. DeMillo’s has a great restaurant in a large boat at the marina.

Freeport, Maine

The home of LL Bean is Freeport, Maine. They have a huge main store, a home store, a fishing store , coffee store, restaurant, etc.. etc. i was not impressed with any of that or the other outlet stores in this town. However, they had several other impressive offerings. We had a wonderful lunch at an Italian restaurant called Tuscan Bistro and then the best lobster dinner ever at the Broad Arrow Tavern at the Harraseeket Inn. All four of us had the lemon lobster fettuccine and we all felt this was our best dish of the entire trip! There was a McDonalds across the street. It was the fanciest McDonalds I have ever seen! The taxi driver said it took five years for them to get approval to build it.

While riding our bikes today, we stopped at a bread store called, When Pigs Fly and we bought some of the yummiest bread. This store had more bread selections that I could every imagine and they all sounded wonderful. We bought two , one for now and one to freeze but I am afraid the second loaf will not make it to the freezer!

Harpswell

We anchored out one night in Harpswell in Casio Bay in the Gulf of Maine. We were on the water most of the day so I was happy to drop the dinghy and go out for another lobster roll dinner. After dinner, we talked with a young lobster fisherman who told us that he has 800 pots out and he checks 400 every day.

Bailey Island Cribstone Bridge Built in 1927. It is a cobwork bridge which is made from granite slabs acquired from local quarries. No mortar or cement was used since the granite was heavy enough to allow the tide to ebb and flow freely.

Mt Desert Northeast Harbor

The trip from Southwest Harbor to Northeast Harbor was another experience with dodge the lobster traps. We were glad that the trip was not too long.

We had a great lunch at the Asticou Inn , built in 1883. The Inn is named after a Penobscot Indian chief who was summering at Northeast Harbor around the time Champlain began his explorations.

After lunch, we rode our bikes around the carriage trails in Acadia National Park. The carriage roads and bridges were financed and directed by John D. Rockefeller between 1913 and 1940. The network includes 57 miles of woodland roads which do not allow automobiles. They only started allowing Ebikes in September, 2019.

Southwest Harbor, Hinckley

The trip to Hinckley to get our AC fixed could have been called “Dodge the lobster pots.” It seemed they were everywhere and we were constantly swerving to avoid them. The Hinckley people were great and we hope that our AC may finally be fixed. However, the weather has cooled so it has not yet had a workout. We had to spend the night so they could get the parts they needed for the repair.

Southwest harbor is a pretty area but there is not too much there. There is a good pie place that makes pies daily. They only sold whole pies so we didn’t buy one but Linda and Robert did and they shared the Maine blueberry pie with us. We went to a great restaurant called Red Sky and had a great dinner.

The mooring balls are busy

Camden, ME

Camden is a great port. Today we took a lovely bike ride to Rockport, stopping at several interesting sites along the way. The biking is great here. There are smooth roads with little traffic and most of the busier roads have bike lanes. We came home, had lunch and then headed out in the other direction for the Camden farmer’s market. Several towns we have visited have their weekday markets in the afternoon. The one in Camden was 3:30 – 6 PM today. Tonight I hope we will go out for more Maine lobster.

These schooners would normally be busy with sailing tours and charters but due to COVID, they are just sitting in the harbor.
These Galloway cows are also called ‘oreo’ cows for obvious reasons. We stopped to watch them on our bike ride to Rockport.
